You can only run for so long …

Two years hasn’t erased the sting of betrayal and the shadow of the past, but Nikolai Alexandrov has finally found a way to live. Moscow, Russia, is the last place anyone would look for a rogue ex-CIA officer, and the members of Grace Baptist Church see beyond his past to the man he is now.

Molly Baird never wanted to be a missionary, but due to her father’s wishes, she lands in Moscow to aid her missionary cousin, Gabe Kelly. All is foreign in the massive city, though, rendering her unable to serve. Only the few English speakers in Grace Baptist’s congregation hold a trace of familiarity—including Nikolai, whose kindness she can’t deny.

Yet when a sniper’s bullet strikes far too close, Nikolai and Molly are thrown together in a desperate race against untold threats. When time runs out, will Nikolai and Molly be able to trust God with the past—and with the future?

Overview

I...don't even know where to begin with this. *deep breath*

So as the blurb says, Molly goes to Russia to help her cousins (aka Gabe and Sophie from Unknown ahhh I loved getting to see them again XD) and ends up meeting Nikolai. Then Stuff happens and because I don't want to give much away, let's just say that Molly and Nikolai go on an adventure of a lifetime.

This book was e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g. The plot was amazing. The character development was incredible. I loved Vanessa's descriptions for the settings and how we got to see what Russia looked like from an American who had never stepped foot in the country. Vanessa also has some INCREDIBLE imagery/similes using music-related words (because Molly places the piano) and as a musician, I loved reading those descriptions. <33 And the suspense??!!! Agegjiaowjeiogeioa it literally felt like I was watching a action-thriller movie!! The things that happen (won't say because of spoilers) were sooo exciting and (ugh idk how to describe it XDD) government/spy/operative-like and did I mention just how suspenseful and thrilling it was?!! šŸ˜†

Idk what else to say other than

Characters

Nikolai. *screams* This man...this man is everything. He's mysterious. He's a fighter. He has issues from past traumatic events. He's protective. He's smart and caring and strong yet broken and ahhh I just....I have no shame in admitting that he's now a fictional crush of mine, okay? XD He's just da best. <3

Molly. The sweet, innocent girl who was sent to Russia. I could relate to her SO much. Vanessa portrayed her fears and struggles of being in a totally different country very well, and I empathized with Molly so much. Even though the poor girl went through so much and had a lot of trials, I enjoyed seeing her work through them. ALSO she's a pianist!!! As a fellow pianist, I adored reading about her career in and love for music.

It was also so fun getting to read about Gabe, Sophia, Evergy and the rest of the crew!! And Gregor...*happy feels* It was epic seeing him grow and change. I just love the guy. šŸ˜œ

Content

I'm pretty sure one character has PTSD because he definitely has panic attacks from remembering past traumatic events. There's some physical fighting and people are shot. As usual, Gregor enjoys his erm..drinks. šŸ˜† Some light, sweet, and adorable romance is also included. *grinz*

Conclusion

This book was filled with action similar to a thriller movie; had amazing Christian messages, and some sweet, clean romance was sprinkled in as well. It was one of the best suspense books I've ever read. I'm not joking. It was that good. So. Go. Read. It!!!!!!!!

Do I even need to announce how many stars I give it? XP

*I received an ARC*

He knew there was a cost. He just didn’t know how great it’d be.

Gabriel Kelly returned to Russia for one reason—to bury his parents. After ten years in the United States, he hadn’t expected to return to his childhood home in the face of tragedy. However, after short days in Moscow, he begins to consider if the same call that cost his parents’ lives is now upon him.

Sofia Rykova’s dreams finally came true when she became a principal soloist with the Bolshoi Ballet. One night, though, an old crush walks back into her life, making her wonder if there is more to life than ballet. Gabe Kelly is just as she remembered, just as she longed for—yet religion stands between them.

Unknown to Gabe and Sofia, danger lurks closer than either would have guessed. The deaths of Gabe’s parents grow more suspicious by the day, and Gabe and Sofia are drawn into the midst of a plot neither can escape. Will obedience to God’s call—in spite of their fears and desires—result in a price too steep to bear?

  2. "And then stuff happens" Greatest. Quote. Ever. I feel so moved and hooked into the book, E. XDDD But seriously I LOVED THIS REVIEW!!!!!! I agree how awesome it was to see Sophia and Gabe again! Just makes me want to go read Unknown again. But we must talk about this: NIKOLAI IS MY FICTIONAL CRUSH AND I WILL FIGHT YOU FOR HIM JUST LIKE I DID OVER SAGE. XDDDD *brandishes sword* Oo My favorite action/suspense/thriller books? R u even ready for this? That's like my favorite genre EVER. Okay so we have Ally Carter's Embassy Row series and Not If I Save You First obviously. Kristina Hall's Moretti Trilogy. Jill Williamson's Thirst (which I don't think is *technically* classified as suspense, but it should've been because it felt very suspenseful!) Chuck Black Wars of the Realm trilogy which is in the action/adventure genre. Serafina and the Black Cloak by Robert Beatty is a good fantasy thriller (though I haven't read it in YEARS). I feel like there's more but I can't think of them right now. XD Told you you weren't ready for this. XDDD Anyway, FANTABULOUS review, sister!!!!! SO glad you enjoyed the book too!

    1. *coughs* *laughs so hard* Ehehehe...yeah...but in my defense I was trying to not spoil the plot. XDD Awwkk thank you sis!!!! Yes, seeing Sophia and Gabe again was the best! *eyes narrow* *kidnaps Nikolai and brings him to my house* HE'S MINE MWHAHA YOU WILL NEVER HAVE HIM!!!!!!! *pulls out sword to use as a defense if you dare enter* XDDDD Oh oh oh yess so *coughs* still need to finish Embassy Row, I've read Not if I Save You first, and I need to finish the Moretti Trilogy (read the first one a while back). Ahhh Thirst is on my TBR and it looks so good, still need to read Wars of the Realm, and has never heard of Serafina and the Black Cloak. I'll have to check that one out!! *is kinda proud of myself that I at least knew of all of these books except for one* XDD *thinks* That does make sense since you basically kinda unintentionally introduced me to all of those. You should be proud of yourself to know how much you've influenced and changed my book world. XDDD Thanks, and I'm so happy that you enjoyed the book too!!
